Schacher Store Exterior 2

A collection of photos from the old Schacher Family store in Old Monroe Missouri. The store was orginally established by J.F. Schacher in Chain of Rocks Missouri. Chain Of Rocks was a small town along the Cuivre River that relied on traffic from Steamboats that would shoot up the Cuivre from the Mississippi River. Once the railroad came through Old Monroe river traffic slowed so Mr. Schacher decided to move his store to Old Monroe in 1900. The Schacher Store stayed in business until December 12th 1996 when it was closed by Marvin "Sunny" Schacher. Sunny recorded the final sale of $82.50 at 3:45 PM that day and closed the doors for the last time at 4PM. Through out the years Mr. Schacher took to writting down key dates & random events on the walls through out the store. Everything from birthdays, deaths, the weather & hanging a swing on the front porch. I was lucky enough to get to explore the Schacher building before it was auctioned off early last year. The store was on the first floor, the families living quarters on the second floor. I feared that after the property was auctioned off the old building would be torn down, it was in pretty rough shape. Thankfully I was wrong! Who ever purchased the property has spent the last several months re-habbing the building. I am not sure what there plans are for it but I am glad to see a piece of Small Town America is going to survive!
